Connecting the World: Why I Want to Be the "Glue" Between You and Japan

そういえば、僕は実は日本生まれではないんですよね。日本生まれではなくて、中国の生まれです。
By the way, I was actually not born in Japan. I was born in China.
そして、中国の中でも少数民族の朝鮮族と言う民族の出身なんですよね。
Specifically, I’m from an ethnic minority group in China called the Chosenzoku (ethnic Koreans in China).
3歳の時に日本に行きました。そこから日本で暮らしながら、でも家に帰ると中国人の両親がいる。で、彼らは韓国語を話していると。
I came to Japan when I was three years old. Since then, I lived in Japan, but at home, I had my Chinese parents, and they spoke Korean.
さまざまな文化的背景の中で、生活してきました。
I grew up living amidst such diverse cultural backgrounds.
それもあってか、自分が日本人か中国人、自分が韓国人だとか、そういう気持ちがあまりしないんですよね。
Maybe because of that, I’ve never strongly felt like I am strictly Japanese, Chinese, or Korean.
じゃあ自分は何者なのか？こういったことを中学生の時によく考えていました。
“Then, who am I?”—I used to think about this a lot when I was a junior high school student.
で、こういったことを考えている人、実は世界にたくさんいるということが最近わかったんですね。
And I recently found out that there are actually many people around the world who think about the same thing.
つまり、自分が何人かというのが、子供の時の環境のおかげで、よくわからない。
In other words, people who don’t clearly know which nationality they belong to because of their childhood environment.
そういった子供たち、そういった幼少期を過ごした人たちのことをですね、「サードカルチャーキッズ」と言うようです。
Children like that, people who spent their childhoods that way, seem to be called “Third Culture Kids” (TCK).
そしてサードカルチャーキッズ、彼らの特性としては、文化的にオープンになる、人見知りをしない、適応能力が高いと。
And as for the characteristics of Third Culture Kids, many articles say they are culturally open, don’t mind strangers, and have high adaptability.
そして自分で何かをしようと、そういった主体性、そういうものがあるということがたくさんの記事の中で書かれています。
They also possess a strong sense of initiative to do things on their own.
実際、僕は公務員を辞めて、自分でビジネスをして、そして今、旅をしながら生活しています。
In fact, I quit my job as a civil servant, started my own business, and am now living while traveling.
本当に世界中から来た色んな人とすぐに仲良くなれる。そして彼らの意見、彼らの価値観、すぐにですね、受け入れることができます。
I can truly make friends quickly with all kinds of people from all over the world, and I can readily accept their opinions and values.
まあ、こういった能力、実は今の世界にすごく必要な能力なんじゃないかなと思うんですよね。
I believe this kind of ability is exactly what the world needs right now.
ということでね、やっぱり僕は自分のこういった生まれもあるか、じゃあ世界に対してやっぱりもっともっとオープンである人、そして交流できる、受け入れられる人。
Because of my own background, I want to connect more with “global talents”—people who are open to the world, capable of interacting, and accepting of others.
そういったグローバル人材ともっと関わっていきたいし、そういった人を育てていきたい。
I want to engage with such global minded people and help nurture them.
そういった人と何かしらもっとこのより良い社会を作っていけるんじゃないかなと思うわけです。
I feel that together with people like that, we can somehow build a much better society.
まあ、その1つに、言葉を教えるというものがあります。
And one way to do that is by teaching language.
文化的に、そして、言語的にも複数の背景を持っている人、そういった人たちとですね、皆さんに言葉を教えるということをですね、今後もしていきたいなと思っているので、皆さん。
Having multiple cultural and linguistic backgrounds myself, I want to continue teaching the language to everyone.
もし日本語勉強をして、日本で生活したいとなった時、いきなりね、適応するの難しい。
When you study Japanese and decide you want to live in Japan, adapting all at once can be very difficult.
だから、そういった、まあ間に僕らみたいな文化的に多様な背景を持つ人間が存在していると。
That’s why having people like us, who have culturally diverse backgrounds, standing in between can help.
接着剤とボンドという形で、皆さんと日本を繋げられるんじゃないかなと思うわけです。
I believe we can connect you with Japan, acting like glue or a bond.
